Why Strong Arms Benefit Your Entire Body – By Nick Nilsson

What’s the first thought in your mind when the subject of “arm training” comes up? If you ask 100 trainers, most will say dumbell curls and dips or barbell curls and pushdowns, right? Sometimes it’s hard to put aside the “traditional” way of thinking and consider something outside the box. In “The Best Arm Exercises You’ve Never Heard Of”, Nick Nilsson suggests it may be time to “make a NEW box and think outside of THAT one!” There are 68 completely unique bicep, triceps and forearms exercises in “The Best Arm Exercises You’ve Never Heard Of”. The book is full of useful training information and absolutely NO fluff.

What are the advantages of having a book JUST about Arms?

That’s the first question I asked myself when starting to review this book. After all, the trend right now is more towards functional and “total body” styles of training. Direct and/or isolated arm work seems to take a back seat to that type of approach these days. Basically, is this just for fun or just fluff training?

So here’s the reasoning as to why direct arm training should be done. I’m sure you’ll agree that it really makes a lot of sense.

1. Direct Arm Training Can Help You Prepare for the “Big” Exercises

Do you have trouble fully locking the bar out at the top when you bench press? The triceps are primarily responsible for that top range of motion. You can quickly see results carry over to your big movements by directly working the triceps with effective “assistance” exercises. Clearly, any movement with a pressing or pushing motion will use considerable tricep strength. But how important is bicep strength? Having strong biceps is critical for exercises like rowing, which involves pulling, and chin-ups, deadlifts, and bent-over rows. Don’t forget that you can only be as good as your weakest attribute.

If you’re doing a bench press and your triceps are relatively weaker than your chest, it’s going to LIMIT the amount of weight you can push. By directly strengthening your weak links, you can improve your total strength in the big lifts. Same for an exercise like chin-ups. Your back may be strong, but if your bicep (or even forearm!) strength limits your training; you’ll never maximize your performance in that exercise. A targeted application of direct arm training can really make a big difference in your lifting. And, of course, you need to use EFFECTIVE exercises for this purpose, otherwise you’re wasting your time.

“The Best Arm Exercises” is specifically focused on creating strong “assistant” muscles, those muscles that help the large muscles do the powerful exercises.

2. Routine Variety

Obviously, a book full of 68 new exercises is going to give you a LOT of variety to choose from. Your body thrives on variety and change. You still DO need to maintain a level of consistency to achieve a training effect, but something as simple as a new exercise or a new way of doing something can really spark results.

Nick’s program acknowledges this; in fact he says that in his personal training he only does the common exercises approximately 75% of the time: squats, presses, bench lifts and similar exercises that we all know. The remaining 25% exercises are new, targeted exercises that he developed for his books and training sites. To get the results you want in a speedy timeframe, you must have a solid, consistent routine; if you simply did random exercises you could end up doubling the time it will take to become fit.

Nick suggests you select a few exercises and work on them until they feel right. Try the arm exercises and get to know how they make your body feel. For the most part, if an exercise is right for you you’ll notice some changes almost right away. Choose the exercises that you can “feel” right away and continue working with those; then add others gradually in a rotation.

As good as these exercises are, I’m quite sure there will be ones that don’t work equally as well for everybody. You have to experiment and find out what works best for YOU. Then work it HARD!
