Times When Circuit Training Isn’t Indicated

The exercise science is very clear here, circuit training is probably the most effective type of training for fat loss.

In fact, circuit training can do more harm than good in some cases.

Thus, here is why circuit training might not be for you:

1. If you have an injury: Do not try to push through the pain here. Circuit training is very intense and requires lots of focus. If you try to push through an injury you run the risk of making it much worse. So focus on fixing the injury before doing any circuits.

2. If you’re just starting out: Unless you are genetically gifted it will be very hard for you to learn how to do circuits the first time around. It takes time to learn each exercise. And it takes even more time to learn how to coordinate them together.

3. If lifting the most weight is your goal: If you want to lift more weight then you have to lift the maximum amount of weight you can each workout. And circuits aren’t conducive towards this type of training. Thus, if maximal loads are your primary goal don’t do circuits.

4. If you have a huge muscle imbalance: It is possible for a well constructed circuit to address and fix the imbalance. However, never do a generic circuit if you have a big muscle imbalance. If you do, you could amplify the magnitude of the imbalance.

5. If speed is your primary objective: Doing a bunch of exercises in a circuit at extremely high speeds is a recipe for disaster and very dangerous. For maximum power or speed make sure you focus on one exercise at a time. If you try to do too much here you run the risk of serious injury.

6. If you hate doing them: Circuits aren’t for everyone. In fact, if you strongly prefer a different type of exercise I strongly recommend that you do it. You see, you are not going to stick with something you do not like. And if you don’t stick with it you won’t get results.

Circuit training does burn a lot of calories and it’s very functional in terms of daily living. But despite these benefits, it’s not for everyone!
