How to choose the best protein powder

More people than ever are looking to supplement their workout routine with a protein powder, for some it can be the key to success that they’re looking for. However choosing the right type of protein supplement can be really difficult, so to help here are a few tips.

It can be quite difficult for people new to protein powders and supplements in general to get used to drinking them, I have to admit they can taste a bit weird sometimes. To help I like to add different fruits to my shakes like oranges and apples, it can really give the drink the extra flavour it needs.

I think it’s really important that you taste any protein powder beforehand before you buy it in any kind of bulk quantity. I know it’s not possible if you’re buying online, but when you go to a specialist supplement store they will often let you try before you buy.

Once you find a powder you like it’s advisable to start buying in bulk as you can save a lot of money. What you want to look at most of all is the price per serving and not just the overall price for the tub. For example if you buy a 1kg tub it can be as much as 20% cheaper per serving when compared to the small pouches.

The most popular protein is whey which is made from milk and it is generally thought to be the most effective protein there is. This is because it has a higher biological value than the protein is most foods like chicken or beef etc. In short your body can absorb and use it really fast so it’s ideal for just before or after a workout. There are also other types of protein for people who are lactose intolerant, e.g. egg protein.

So those are my tips for finding the best type of protein for you. It’s important to remember that we all react differently to minerals to experiment to find the perfect supplement for you.
