Creatine Made Easy!
You may have heard about it, but do you know what creatine is? Well, it is a natural substance that is present in every cell in your body. And it functions as a store of energy, which makes it necessary for your survival.
Though it is an endogenous substance, it can be obtained via diet. Mainly the liver, kidneys and pancreas are responsible for synthesizing it from amino acids present in the food you eat. Actually creatine itself is an amino acid by nature.
Once synthesized it is transported to various parts of the body via the bloodstream. Supply of this substance to the muscles, brain and nerve cells is most important because these require more energy throughout the day.
In our body, the substance creatine is primarily stored as phosphocreatine in the skeletal muscles. Phosphocreatine, constitute 70% of the entire reserves and the rest in known as ‘free-creatine’ which amount to about 30%.
The rate of production of creatine determines the pace of muscle recovery from exertion. Both are directly related and therefore, faster the production of creatine, the faster will be the recovery.
Increased levels of phosphocreatine can help improve muscular performance during intense exercises or other strenuous physical activity. This is why supplements containing this substance are highly sought after by athletes and bodybuilders. Clinical trials have also confirmed that these supplements can increase muscle strength, quite significantly.
But you should also note that there are some unpleasant side effects of consuming these supplements. Stomach cramps, nausea, diarrhea and muscle cramps are some of the common complaints. Thus more trials will be needed before these supplements can actually be declared safe.
Therefore, it is only wise to not to depend on these supplements for creatine and include food products in our diet that have high amino acid content in them.
