Beginner BodyBuilding: Why The Gym You Choose Matters

The gym you choose will have an enormous impact on your success so do not take this matter lightly. Below are what I consider to be the most important factors.

1) Equipment

Be certain that the gym has enough equipment to go around.

For instance, are there enough bench press stations? I’ve visited gyms where there was always a line to do bench presses. When I finally got my turn I’d always get interrupted by people asking me how many more sets I had left. You need to do each set with maximum intensity and rest as long as you need to between sets. The last thing you need is someone pressuring you to hurry and be done!

2) Cost

Beginner bodybuilding gym membership plans shouldn’t be too expensive. You can save money by opting for ‘express’ gyms. They may not have a swimming pool or all the other fittings and trimmings but can serve your beginner bodybuilding needs just as well. At the moment Gold’s Gym Express and 24 Hour Fitness express charge about $20/month.

Just make sure you read the contract carefully to avoid any hidden charges.

3) Hours

Check that the gym is open when you are able to work out. Don’t get seduced by one of those plans that charges $9.99/month but then only allows you to use the gym between the hours of 11am and 3pm. You’ll just end up skipping workouts and impeding your progress.

4) Location

Closer to home or the office is best. You will have fewer excuses to skip workouts and will avoid the wasting time on long drives back and forth.

5) Demographics

You don’t have to be too picky about this one but the obvious crowds to avoid are:

a. Lots of women. These gyms tend to focus on yoga and ‘cute’ exercises that are useless to you as a bodybuilder.

b. A crowd of yelling muscle heads and hardcore body builders. The ones who yell at the top of their voice as they squat 1000lbs for 10 reps! These guys can be intimidating and often use steroids. They can be a bad influence. What works for them will not work for you.

6) Cleanliness

This is a personal pet peeve of mine. I can’t stand a filthy gym with days old sweat caked on the benches. This type of environment could gross you out and make you less eager to go to the gym and workout. Motivation is important. Don’t pay for a gym that de-motivates you.

All the best in your beginner bodybuilding journey!
